. . . In the spring of '75 I was released with permission to emigrate to Zion, and Elder Peter Jeppesen was appointed to succeed me.
It was now about five years since Maria and I got acquainted (and engaged). We both obtained means to emigrate, and left Copenhagen in the latter part of June (1875). But a few days before leaving we were married by Elder Soren Christofferson (Hansen) from Manti, (now dead). The ceremony was performed in secret (with no witnesses) as it was against the law for him to marry us. [p.23]
We were about six hundred in that company, nearly all members of the Church. Across the Atlantic, I was helping steward, bringing the meals to passengers, washing dishes, cleaning floors, etc., and by this earned part of my passage.
