. . . In June 1871 we sailed from Liverpool, England on the steamship Wyoming. There were 248 Saints in this company emigrating to Utah under the direction of Robert F. Nelsen [Neslen] and George Lake. When we sailed from Liverpool there was quite a squall and a small fishing smack was in trouble, so our steamship anchored there and went to the rescue. There were eight men and a dog and cat on board and of course they came with us to America. [p.1]
Before we reached New York, there was a smallpox scare and we all had to be vaccinated. There was one case of scarlet fever on board and my sister was quite sick too and it was thought that she had the scarlet fever, but she got better. We had quite a pleasant trip and everyone seemed so very nice. We arrived in New York City on July third and from there we took a train for Utah and arrived in Ogden, July 12, 1871. There were six of us children with our parents: George, Laura, Ellen, Kate, Frank and myself. . . . [p.2]
