July 30th. Left West Tinby Street at 8 a.m. Met several of the Saints at Northwest Street Station. Bade them "goodbye" and started at 8:50. Picked up several passengers on the way to Liverpool area. At 12:30 went to the office "42"[THE ADDRESS OF THE ENGLISH MISSION WAS 42 Islington]. Helped get the Saints on board. Slept at the office on the floor.
July 31st. Made some purchases in town. Spent the forenoon in the offices. Elders Bliash, Carington, Wardley, and I took cab for the first. Was on board the Wisconsin at 3:30. Bade goodbye to the elders and [p. 1] took our rooms, No. 14. The boat stormed out at 4:30. We enjoyed a pleasant evening and Wight organized the company of 150 souls of Saints. Passengers all told 680. Our people were all well cared for. Plenty of room &c.
Aug. 1st. Wrote several letters back to England. Among them the following. [THE REST OF THE PAGE IS BLANK.] [p. 2] I began to feel a little sick in the morning. All day felt well after the first little faint spell. This day we made 181 miles. Stopped at Queenstown at 2 p.m.. Took on some passengers and mail. Some Irish came on to sell goods &c.
Aug. 2nd. I did not get up. Sick all day. Made 287 miles. Elder [George P.] Ward also sick.
Aug. 3rd. Made 258 miles. Still sick got could [UNCLEAR] not sit up and not eat lunch. Felt deathly sick.
Aug. 4th. Made 192 miles against a head wind. Most all the passengers were sick. We kept our [p. 3] rooms all day. Kept very very sick.
Aug. 5th. Made 248 miles. Very strong wind most all day against us. Ward & I kept in our rooms. One passenger broke his arm (not our people).
Aug. 6th. Made 291 miles. Wind still in our face or against us.
Aug. 7th. Made 313 miles against head winds. Most all the passengers getting better. Some cabin passengers felt a little air [-] did not feel to associate with us &c.
Aug. 8th. Made 268 miles. Wind still against us. Saw some ships. I got out to dinner from this time I began to feel [p. 4] better. We held meeting with our folks. All appeared quiet and nice on board.
Aug. 9th. Made 264 miles. Did not feel very well. Weather big wind. Our rooms were very close-retired. Cold. We began to enjoy our meals from this date.
Aug. 10th. I felt better than I had all the way. Enjoyed my food. 4 of us paid the stewards £2 for waiting upon us. Took a swift [UNCLEAR] of big gangs on board. Wrote up my journal and felt very thankful that I had thus far been preserved on [p. 5] my journey. The officers and men all treated us kindly on the ship.
11 Aug., Sunday. Very pleasant time. The weather fine. Our pilot came on board. Met many ships and barges. Mild. Many arguments with some of the passengers. The Saints met in the steerage for meetings. We gave such counsel as we discussed best for the Saints.
Aug. 12th. Came in sight of land. Came by Sandy Hook and up the river. Very fine place. Passed the quarantine officials "OK". Came up opposite New York. Layed off the docks for about 6 hours. Cabin passengers [p. 6] went off by try [UNCLEAR]. We got our luggage through all right by paying $40. We were taken to Castle Gardens at 4 p.m., landed &c. I took a room in the Stephen's house after which I went over to Williamsburg. Stayed with Brothers Byweather & Frost. Spent a good time with the folks.
Aug. 13th. Wrote a letter to President A. [Albert] Carrington, also to my folks. Returned to New York. Helped the Saints all day. Crossed the river over to Jersey City. Got the people on the cars. The weather very oppressive. We were quite busy all day in the City. Left Jersey about 7 p.m. [p. 7] A heavy storm came on just as we left the spot. The Saints were all pretty comfortable having ample room. We passed as very pleasant night.
Aug. 14th. Came to Pittsburgh where we had to change cars, luggage &c. Saw many fine places through the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio &c. Night came on just as we arrived in the State of Indiana.
Aug. 15th. Came to Chicago. Changed cars and luggage and started. Elder [George P.] Ward was left behind. We stopped for him and started after which we were informed that Elder Duncansen and another was left. However we did not wait. We traveled through the night next [p. 8] morning. Duncansen caught up with the train.
Aug. 16th. Passed through Iowa. Arrived at Council Bluffs at 11 p.m. Changed over to Omaha in a storm. Waited until morning to buy provisions &c. From Omaha to Ogden we had a rather slow journey, however, we made the trip.
Tuesday evening 20th at 7:00 p.m.-All well and in good spirits. Our company numbered 220 souls all told. We took train for Salt Lake at 8:30 arrived at ll. [p. 9]
