. . . A company was soon formed to come to Zion and when we reached Liverpool we had to stop three weeks for favorable weather conditions for our ship to set sail. I was during this time that I became better acquainted with my dear friend and gospel brother William Jex, and we decided to be married. The ceremony was performed by Elder Daniel Karns [Garns] February 22, 1854, the day the Windermere began its eventful voyage.
When we put out to sea it was very rough and te passengers were shut down in the hatchway and we ahd an awful time before we reached New Orleans, being put on half rations and having much sickness and many deaths on our way. . . . [p.9]
