. . . I left on the 2nd of April and went to Liverpool on Mon. the 4th and set sail on the ship William Tapscott on the 19th 1859 (on my way to Utah) for New York. We had a very pleasant journey across the sea, music, dancing, piece speaking, songs, preaching, & all kinds of fun & pleasure and plenty to eat and no work to do and we arrived at New York on the 11th of May 1859. My aunt Mary was along with me. We stayed at Castle Garden a few hours. Then we started through the states. We went on the railroad and steamboat "Sir Isaac Newton" to Florence Nebraska Territory where we landed in about 1 week and waited at Florence about 2 weeks for our handcarts to be made to cross the plains with. After which we started on foot to pull our hand carts across the plains 1000 miles which we did with pleasure until our provisions begun to get short, then we began to feel the sting of hunger very sensibly and a great deal of suffering was experienced & 5 deaths.
