Elder J. J. Walser, writing to President J. H. Smith from on board the S. S. Nevada, May 17th, says:
"As we are nearing Queenstown, we hasten to send you a report of our proceedings and journey thus far. Shortly after you and the brethren with you left us, the following orzanization of our company was effected: Elders Ben. E. Rich, president; J. J. Walser, clerk; C. H. Greenwell, captain of the guard, and Robert Ure, chaplain for the English, and Fredrick Bangerter for the Swiss and German Saints. The English and Swiss and German Saints are each party divided into two wards, the former presided over by Bothers Robert Titmus and Charles Holt, the latter by Brothers Philip Rausch and Frederick Haneter. The Scandinavian Saints are under the care of Elder Rasmus Christofferson.
"Thus far everthing is moving on propitiously, everybody is in high glee and a feeling of gratefulness to God for his blessings unto us finds ready expression in the prayers and joyful songs of the people. We have decided to have prayers at 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
"We are favored with most excellent weather, the ship glides through the water swiftly and steadily, the people are well cared for, and everything betokens a prosperous voyage." [p.348]
