British Mission Manuscript History Voyage Entry
“Thursday, November 5. . . . The steamship ‘Anchoria’ sailed from Glasgow, Scotland, with 20 Saints on board, bound for Utah. The company consisted of 17 emigrants (9 from the British and 8 from the Swiss and German Mission) and 3 returning Elders, namely Daniel Stevens, John Amor and Hyrum Christensen. (Orig. Doc.)” [BMMH, 1896]. “Elder [Daniel] Stevens made the homeward voyage on the Anchoria, which the telegraphic news told of as having broke her propeller 134 miles out from Sandy Hook. Elder Stevens says that during the 59 hours and 20 minutes which was occupied in repairing the vessel so she could proceed to harbor, the weather was most delightful, the thermometer registering 66 degrees in the shade in the day time, and the sea being quite calm. The passengers spent the time in reading, games, fishing, etc. A number of fish were caught, Brother Stevens himself hooking a codfish nearly three feet long” [DN, 53:786].
