“Saturday August 29. The steamship ‘Nevada’ sailed from Liverpool with 135 Saints on board, bound for Utah, namely, 37 emigrating Saints from Great Britain, 38 from Scandinavia, 47 from the Swiss and German Mission and 9 from the Netherlands, 4 returning visitors and six returning Elders, whose names are as follows: John H. Woodbury, John H. Clark, and Ether S. McBride from the British Mission, and Jacob Zollinger and Conrad Abegler from the Swiss and German Mission. (Orig. Doc.)” [BMMH, 1891]. “The weather was severe, the sea being very boisterous the first four days. For three or four days the passengers were kept below, the storm raging so heavily as to make it unsafe for anyone to be on deck. The tempest reached its height on the night of the 7th, and of the 679 passengers on board there were not a few who feared they would not reach land. The vessel, however bore steadily on and arrived at her destination in safety. On August 31 a fireman committed suicide by jumping overboard. The passengers were well pleased with the treatment received from the ship’s officers” [MS 53:618].
