On board the S. S. Idaho, Off Queenstown, July 1st, 1875.President Joseph F. Smith.
Dear Brother,--Having so favorable an opportunity we write you a few lines to mail at Queenstown, where we expect to arrive to about six o'clock this evening. We have had a very pleasant voyage so far, the sea still and everything fine and agreeable. This morning was a little rainy and foggy, for which reason we will not reach Queenstown so soon as we otherwise would have done; but now the weather is clear and fine, most all the passengers are on deck and they seem to enjoy themselves first rate.
We have organized the company into six wards, with a president and two assistants for each ward, who also may call on others to help them if it should be necessary. Also a captain of the guard with his helps to assist him. Elder [John] Frantzen will continue to be our secretary.
The captain and officers on board, so far as we yet know, are gentlemen, and we feel assured they will do everything to make it comfortable and agreeable for our people.
We feel under many obligations to you, Brother Smith, for your kindness to us while in Liverpool, and the good and valuable instructions we received just before starting, which we shall endeavor to carry out to the best of our ability.
We also appreciate your labors and exertions in arranging everything so comfortably for so large a company, consisting of 765 souls of our people, two stewards and seven returning elders included.
With kind love to yourself, Elders Young and Hanham, and the brethren associated with you, praying God to bless you in all your administrations we remain
Your brethren in the gospel,
