Thomas Alston, third son of James Alston and Ann Molyneux was born October 24, 1857 at Southport, Lancashire, England. Father died May 1863. Two elder brothers emigrated to Utah in 1864. In 1865 mother, self and two sisters younger emigrated; took passage May 1865 in the David Hoadley, a condemned sailing vessel, in company with about 35 other passengers and after a tedious passage of about 11 weeks landed at Castle Garden, New York. Crossed the plains from Wyoming on the Missouri River, near Florence, Nebraska, with independent company of ox teams, Captain Walker, arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah, in November, having been about six months making the trip. . . .[p.211]
