"SECOND COMPANY OF THE SEASON. -- On Saturday, May 24th, we had the pleasure of witnessing the departure of the second company of emigrating Saints of the season, on the S. S. Wyoming. The number of souls, exclusive of the returning elders, is 162. Of these 77 are English, 43 Scotch, 26 Swiss, 3 German, 11 Welsh, and 2 Irish. The elders returning with the company are A. F. Macdonald, Jacob Scharrer, Joseph E. Cowley
, Joseph Bull, junior, Aaron J. Macdonald, W. J. B. Carter, J. F. Miller. Also S. L. Adams, who reached England on the 6th of September, 1878, on a visit to his relatives, but who has also occupied considerable of his time in preaching.
In the forenoon a meeting of the elders on board was held in one the saloons of the vessel, at the call of President Budge. Prayer was offered by Elder Hugh Findlay, and remarks appropriate to the circumstances were made by Elder John Nicholson. President Budge gave some very valuable instructions, and expressed his full and unqualified approval of the elders who were returning. He then made the following nominations for officers of the company: For president, A. F. Macdonald; first and second counselors, Jacob Sharrer and Joseph E. Cowley; chaplain, Joseph E. Cowley; chaplain, Joseph Bull, junior; clerk, John Irvine.
Besides the returning elders and the brethren already mentioned as taking part in the proceedings, the following were present on the occasion: Francis Cope, Joseph Bull, J. L. Bunting, J. Rider, W. N. Williams, I. M. Wardle, W. H. Haigh, W. W. Turner, John C. Schofield and H. Rolapp. The spirit of peace pervaded the little meeting, which was dismissed with prayer by
Elder Francis Cope.
The total number of souls, including the missionaries returning is 170. As usual every necessary provision was made for the comfort of the people by Mr. Ramsden and his assistants. The ship steamed out of the Mersey about two o'clock in the afternoon."
