Christiania, April 3rd - At five in the afternoon I took leave of my chateau land. I left with a party of 17 souls for Hull. Embarked on the steamer "Marsdin." Many of the Saints was present and bid us our farewell, all seemingly happy. Those on board of going and the other of same being unable to follow on board the steamer.
Saturday, April 5. I was very sick all day. I kept my bunk.
Steamer, April 6. I was still sick. We had a good time but few was sick. The captain came in 2 times during the day, and had a chat. He acted very familiar and we chatted freely.
Steamer, Monday, Apr. 7. I sat up nearly all night and felt bad. [p. 117] At 5 a.m. we landed. After being landed we had our luggage examined and we was sure ready for our sailing. Here we met the party of Saints from Copenhagen [-] the brethren from there. [Christopher D.] Fjeldsted was the leader of the party. I was, as well as they was, happy to meet. We was sure bounding along for Liverpool. After a ride of 5 hours, all well, we was taken on board the steamer. Seen to the emigrants and had them all quartered away. Had supper and chatted and then went to bed. I sent a letter to the President Schougard [Niels C. Sheuguard]
Tuesday, April 8. I left the steamer in the morning in the company with Brother J. W. Anderson, a young man from Ephraim. We went up [to] Liverpool and bought some books, and took a good look at the city. Anderson and I had our likeness taken for remembrance.
Steamer, April 9. In the morning we had a few instructions from Smith. Had our bunks assigned us and left the dock at 9. [- - - - - ] [p. 118]
Steamer, Thursday, April 10. A little rough, sun shining, more or less sickness. A boy drank [-] whiskey 4 year old only. I had to go and lay down. Kept my bed all day. There was an organization I shall describe that I witnessed and assisted in a marriage the first day. 302 emigrants, 17 elders, some others not of us.
Friday, April 11. Fine, the boy died this morning. All hands on deck. One birth. I kept my berth until after noon. I suffered much in my head. The funeral took place at 4 p.m. I laid in the smoke house all afternoon. Sat a little, felt bad.
Steamer, Saturday, April 12, [-] and a good deal windy. An infant born. I was pretty sick. Deck a little. I was about all day. Had a good day laughing, telling tales by some of the elders, all well. [p. 119]
Steamer, Sunday, April 13 Windy and trying to rain. I feel better. I attended services like the Church of England. I had a little dinner. I feel good. All the saints feel well.
Monday, April 14. All well as a general thing. I felt awful bad. I had but little to eat all day. In the afternoon I felt a little better.
Steamer, Tuesday, April 15. I felt capital this morning. We are having good wind. Going at a rapid speed. I enjoyed my meals all day. At night I amused the company with singing and playing. All well at night.
Steamer, Wednesday, April 16. I was well and we are having good weather, making good speed. All well.
Steamer, Thursday, April 17. A beautiful day. We are having good winds an [-] [p. 120] cloudy, a little sickness .
Steamer, Friday, April 18. I was busy all day getting collections for the stewards and the custom officers also. I am marring [UNCLEAR]. Was set to gathering money for buying provisions for the whole company. Busy all day. Fair sailing.
SS Nevada, April 19. A beautiful morning. I felt very well. Had a good breakfast and then at my work again. Today we seen several steamers. The steamer "Oregon" passed us this day noon. It made the trip across from Queenstown to New York in 6 days, 8 hours, and 20 minutes. Pilot came on board this morning. Now 9 o'clock in the evening. In the river, lights all around.
SS Nevada, April 20. Pretty morning, all busy [p. 121] for officers. After the custom officers came on board, they took our names seen to the luggage they was very tolerable. At 12 midday, was landed in Castle Garden. Stayed there Sunday all day. Nothing off our side occurred.
New York, April 21, 84 Another beautiful day. Brother [-] and I bought a lot of provisions and at 6:00 p.m. we left for New Jersey. We boarded the train and was off at 9:30 for our journey.
