New York, May 28, 1882.President A. [Albert] Carrington.
Dear Brother,--It is with pleasure that we employ this opportunity of informing you of our safe arrival in this city after a pleasant and prosperous voyage across the Atlantic. After bidding you and the brethren "good-bye" at Liverpool, the returning elders immediately met together and effected a partial organization by electing William Bulter, chaplain, Thomas Hardwedge, captain of the guard, and A. [Abraham] H. Cannon, secretary. The following day the organization was completed, the English and German Saints being placed in different compartments. Four wards were also formed and as many local elders were appointed to preside over the same [p.381] and see to the welfare of the Saints. Our journey through the channel was very pleasant, and only on the morning of the third day did anyone experience the unpleasant sensation of seasickness. It became, however, quite prevalent, but with fine weather and a calm sea it soon passed away. All was done that could be fore the sick, and too much cannot be said in praise of the ship's officers and crew, who did all in their power for our comfort, and were especially careful to provide suitable food for the sick, for all of which we were, of course, very grateful. After three days, all were so far recovered as to be able to attend morning and evening prayers, and the meetings which were held on board. On the morning of the 26th, however, we were compelled to consign the body of a Swiss child, six months old, daughter of Ellsbeth [Elsbeth] Sturzenegger [Strugenegg], to the sea. With this exception, all moved along harmoniously, and to our entire satisfaction.
Yesterday we arrived in the New York docks in good health and spirits, and were pleased to meet Brother [James H.] Hart, who informed us that he had made arrangements for us to proceed on our journey Zionward this evening.
Praying God to bless you in your labors, and with kindest regards to yourself and all at "42," [THE ADDRESS OF THE LDS MISSION OFFICE IN LIVERPOOL WAS 42 ISLINGTON] we remain,
Your brethren in the gospel,
W. [William] R. Webb, President.A. [Abraham] H. Cannon, Clerk [p.382]
